UK/SA Exhibition
2007
CONCEPT:
For an illustration exhibition staged simultaneously in Cape Town and London I created a portrait that could be viewed from the top or the bottom, an illustration of the idea that we're all pretty much the same when it comes down to it.

The Quarterly Issue 1
2012
CONCEPT:
Our company newsletter, The Quarterly was a single sheet printed with noteworthy news on one side and a poster on the other. The poster would serve as a visual interpretation of the issue number. For the first issue we featured a one-legged dog, a little play on the fact that people will often speak of a dog with a missing leg as one-legged.

Wavescapes Film Festival
Campaign design and illustration
005
CONCEPT:
The Wavescapes Film Festival – a festival of surf films – needed to tie in with its sister festival, The Durban Film Festival. To do this I employed the same style of illustration and carried through the 'eye head' used in the Durban Film Festival campaign. Rather than dancing in a forest however, our protagonist here rides a huge wave, the trail of spray from his board creating a shadow that looks very much like a strip of film.

Woolworths
Africa Man
2009
CONCEPT:
We were tasked with developing a series of products for retailer Woolworths to celebrate South Africa's costing of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
This pattern was borne of our process, a graphic that features a repeat motif of a football player extending himself to reach the ball. The negative space around the player is something else altogether.

Dutchmann
Kalahari Speed Week poster
2013
CONCEPT:
Dutchmann commissioned ten designers to create posters to commemorate the 2013 Kalahari Speed Week, an annual festival of speedsters and muscle cars out in the desert.
A zebra in a leopardskin suit driving a souped up wildebees skull seemed like an apt metaphor for the event.

Farryl Purkiss
Fruitbats and Crows album artwork
2008
CONCEPT:
For Farryl Purkiss' Fruitbats and Crows album artwork, we created an all black world, a strange forest where flora and fauna spelled out the album title. We photographed Farryl and dropped him into this dark world, riding on an ostrich shaped guitar. Or was it a guitar shaped ostrich?

I Heart Dbn
Event flyer/T-shirt
2008
CONCEPT:
In 2008 Jacob Zuma was not yet the president of South Africa. In fact he was seen by many as something of a gangster; a ruthless politician who was up on charges of corruption and rape and who seemed bent on running the country. This made him the ideal candidate to promote a night of wild debauchery. He just needed some bling and a name that was a bit less Zulu and a bit more hiphop... like maybe, JZ?

disturbance
Visual identity system
2007
CONCEPT:
The identity we developed for our own studio took as its premise the idea that a disturbance is a break from the everyday.
A series of illustrations were created, showing the everyday and how it is disrupted when it suddenly aligns with the disturbance logo.

Woolworths
World Cup product proposals
2009
CONCEPT:
Retailer, Woolworths, invited disturbance to develop a range of products to celebrate the 2010 Football World Cup which was to be hosted by South Africa.
Among the concepts we submitted was a double album of football anthems. In keeping with Woolworths’ World Cup positioning of “Play the World”, we proposed that disc one be a compilation of original African football anthems while disc two was comprised of international tracks performed by international artists.
The cover illustration features a typical South African soccer fan, dressed in his makarapa, a home-made headpiece fashioned from a construction hard-hat.
